Nominations for the 60th Annual Grammy Awards hint Hollywood may finally be listening to the call for more diversified nominees. With artists of color leading the nominations for major musical categories, it’s clear the 2018 Grammys will be breaking away from their highly criticized history of white-washed award shows.
For the first time in over a decade, the category for Album of the Year will have no white male nominees.
More than that, women of color have not been locked out the Grammys this year. After becoming the most-nominated female artist for the 2018 Grammys for her debut album “Ctrl”, R+B crooner SZA released a heartfelt thank-you note to express her gratitude.

When asked about the more diversified categories this year, Recording Academy President Neil Portnow told Billboard, “We have taken a concerted effort to making sure that the voting membership of the Academy is representative of the creative community.”
Bronx-native Cardi B will also be making moves for the 2018 award show with her breakout single, “Bodak Yellow.”
After becoming the first female rapper to hold the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in more than a decade, the rapper earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.
It’s interesting to note how Jay-Z’s album “4:44” snagged a nomination for Album of the Year. Just last year, Beyoncé’s highly praised “Lemonade” lost in the same category to Adele’s “25.”
A shocked Adele later on explained her frustration to Billboard about Beyoncé’s loss, “I felt like it was her time to win. What the f*ck does she have to do to win album of the year? That’s how I feel.” Beyoncé also lost to white rock singer Beck in the very same category merely two years before this.
This year’s line-up Grammy nominated artists have cause some not-so-subtle backlash from some, but the rest of Grammys audiences seem happy with the choices.
After finding out who the nominees were for this years Grammys, Portnow told Billboard, “I was very pleased,” he said, calling the nominations “a wonderful reflection on our organization and how relevant and in touch and savvy our voting members are.”
Other notable nominees of color include Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Bruno Mars, Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert and more.
